Manticores are naturally most famous for their reputation as maneaters. Manticores had since made their way into Greek Mythology and were used as counterparts to Sphinxes, before it would later become a staple in Medieval Europe Bestiaries, and had since become a heraldric symbol by many nations.
Of course, Manticores look nothing like tigers, and given their rows of powerful teeth and their tendency to leave nothing behind upon feeding on their prey its easy to see where the striped feline ends and the monster begins. Manticores originally hail from Persian Mythology, though their origins could even come from Indian legend and folklore, likely heresay caused from fear of India’s greatest native predators tigers. However, put these ferocious mammals next to any scaly or feathered archosaurian dragon and you can easily tell the difference. Though varied, most cultures describe their Manticores with wings similar to bats or dragons, making them easily mistaken for dragonkin. Beyond that mane of course, horrid hair lies a human-like face full of rows of shark-like teeth, and at the other end is usually a tail that appears scorpion or dragon-like, almost always containing a poisonous barb or stingers that can be launched like missiles. They have lion-like bodies, but are by no means related to the King of the Jungle. Physically a Manticore varies from tale to tale, but most of them all have similar features. From the world of Warhammer to the lands of Might and Magic, there’s no shortage of these man-faced monsters. Their reputation as “maneaters” has transcended their original mythology ten times over and has seen them as a common foe in many worlds ranging from the realm of Faerûn to even the the kingdoms of Westeros and Essos. There is good reason, of course Manticores are among the few predators specialized in hunting and eating the flesh of humans and most other sentient mortals.
